All of the colleges give the degree of Physician of Podiatric Medication (DPM). The four-year podiatric medical school is followed by a healthcare facility based residency, which is hands-on post-doctoral training. Their residency model was standardized to 3-years of post-graduate training in 2011, and the residency is now referred to as the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency (PMSR).
They work alongside their MD and DO equivalents in such rotations as emergency situation medicine, internal medicine, contagious illness, behavioral medication, physical medicine and rehab (PM&R), vascular surgical treatment, general surgery, orthopedic surgical treatment, plastic surgical treatment, dermatology and podiatric surgery and medicine. Fellowship training is offered after residency in such fields such as foot and ankle traumatology or limb salvage.
Though the ABPM and ABFAS are more common, other boards not recognized by CPME are challenging the status quo give board qualified/certified status. The American Board of Multiple Specializeds in Podiatry (ABMSP) is one extra option and has been accrediting podiatrists since 1998. The DPM superseded the historical DSC (Medical professional of Surgical Chiropody) degree in the 1960s.
